The Science of Natural Cooling: Evaporative Cooling

Terracotta clay is a porous material. Under a microscope, it contains thousands of tiny channels and micro-pores throughout its structure. When you fill a clay bottle with water, a tiny fraction of that water seeps slowly through these pores and reaches the outer surface of the bottle.

On the outer surface, this water evaporates — and evaporation requires energy in the form of heat. That heat is drawn from the water inside the bottle, lowering its temperature in the process. The result: water inside a clay bottle is typically 3–5°C cooler than ambient temperature, achieved entirely passively with no electricity, no refrigerant, and no technology beyond the clay itself.

Why Clay-Cooled Water is Better Than Refrigerated Water

Refrigeration cools water to around 4°C — significantly colder than the ambient temperature that clay achieves. Clay is not a substitute for a water filter in heavily contaminated water. But as a complementary layer of natural purification for standard tap or filtered water, it adds genuine value.
