The BPA Replacement Problem
BPA was replaced primarily with BPS (bisphenol S) and BPF (bisphenol F). Both belong to the same bisphenol chemical family. Both have been shown in studies to exhibit similar endocrine-disrupting properties to BPA — including interference with oestrogen, testosterone, and thyroid hormones.
A 2019 study published in the journal Environmental Health Perspectives found that BPS caused the same type of hormone disruption in animal models as BPA. The researchers concluded that BPA-free did not mean chemical-free or safe.
The Microplastics Problem
Beyond chemical leaching, plastic bottles of all types — BPA-free or not — shed microplastics into the water they contain. A landmark 2024 study found that plastic bottles release up to 240,000 microplastic and nanoplastic particles per litre of water under normal use conditions.
Microplastics have now been found in human blood, lung tissue, breast milk, and placentas. The long-term health implications are still being studied, but the presence of synthetic polymer particles in human tissue is considered by researchers to be cause for serious concern.
What About Filtered Water in Plastic Bottles?
Filtering your tap water is an excellent step — but pouring filtered water into a plastic bottle partially undoes the benefit.
